The Department of State (DOS)<\/strong><\/a> was established in 1778 and regulates more than 30 occupations within the state such as real estate professionals. Within the departments, the NY Department of State\u2019s Division of Licensing Services<\/strong><\/a> (DLS) oversees the licensure and regulation within the industry while protecting the welfare of all New Yorkers. The <\/strong>NYS Board of Real Estate<\/strong><\/a> was later established to specifically authorize the content of courses, advise the DOS on policies with examination, continuing education and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In order to obtain a real estate license in NY, one must be at least 18 years of age and have at least a high school diploma or equivalent. The DOS requires an applicant to complete a 75-hour approved<\/a> pre-licensing course. The courses are offered in person or online. Before registering for the state exam, each person is required to pass the Real Estate School exam to earn the Certification of Completion for the course. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The New York Estate Exam must be passed with a 70% or higher within the 90 minutes of allotted time. Applicants can schedule their exam on the NY Department of State Occupational Licensing Management System. Exam sites are listed on the DOS\u2019s website<\/a>. A sponsoring broker is necessary for each real estate salesperson in the State of NY to finalize the application for a license. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
